Meet Gradebook Project Manager Mariana Rocha

Meet Mariana Rocha, world traveler, outdoor sports fanatic, Portuguese immigrant and Project Manager of TeacherPlus Gradebook at Rediker. Learn more about Mariana and what’s next for TeacherPlus Gradebook in this month's Meet the Rediker Software Family.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Mariana: I was born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal but moved to the United States 9 years ago to pursue my college education. Even though I knew very little English, I excelled as a college undergraduate and subsequently moved on to the graduate level, earning my MBA from Bay Path University. It was during this time that my interest in technology, particularly within the educational industry, sparked.

How did you come to join the Rediker Software Family?

Mariana: When I was a graduate student at Bay Path I worked in the career center, which gave me the opportunity to connect with Rich Rediker. Rich invited me to attend Rediker Software’s famous workshop where I had the pleasure of meeting some of the staff, learn about their innovative SIS products and witness a professional environment where everyone works as a team.  I was amazed by the spirit and mission of this company and thrilled with the idea of being part of such a great organization. The decision to become a Rediker member was a no-brainer.

What is your current role at Rediker?

Mariana: I am the Project Manager of TeacherPlus Gradebook, which is our company’s new ahead-of-the-curve gradebook software. I am responsible for the ongoing development and support of this product in its multiple platforms – web & mobile.

What sets TeacherPlus Gradebook apart from the competition?

Mariana: We listen! Our team has developed this program based on valuable customer feedback and educational best practices. Furthermore, users can access TeacherPlus anytime, anywhere by using Macs, PCs, Chromebooks, iPads, and Android tablets. Last but not least, grades and other types of information can be accessed live through our PlusPortals without any uploading!

What’s next for TeacherPlus Gradebook?

Mariana: The next big thing is the HTML5 version of the gradebook, which is due out later this month. We have been hard at work in our endeavor to convert TeacherPlus to HTML5. This conversion brings a number of benefits including improvements to speed, mobile optimization and cross browser compatibility. The HTML5 version is intended to work in any browser on PCs and Macs with no plugin. It also has an improved user interface that will be familiar for teachers already using the product but is very sharp and modern.

Another important development is the expansion of our skills/standards functionality, including the ability to import skills into the TeacherPlus Management Site and several new options for calculating linked skills.

What do you like most about your job?

Mariana: What’s not to like? Rediker has become my home away from home. I enjoy working with my fun colleagues and interacting with our customers from all corners of the world.  In addition, I appreciate the support and mentoring I have received from Rediker’s leadership, which is helping me grow into the professional I aspire to become. Lastly, I treasure the opportunity I have been given to make a difference in the educational world and make my mother’s job, who is a high school teacher, a bit easier!

When you aren’t working on the gradebook, how do you like to spend your time outside the office?

Mariana: I love nature and any outdoor sports. Some of my favorite hobbies include playing tennis, horseback riding and swimming. In recent years I have made a more adventurous bucket list which contains skydiving, rock climbing and diving. I hope to cross those items off my list soon! I’m also a world traveler and have visited 18 countries and lived in four – Portugal, Ireland, Mozambique and the United States.

As a Portuguese native, can you provide any advice for future visitors?

If you are visiting Portugal you should bring comfortable shoes so you can explore some of the most beautiful castles, stunning cobblestone streets and breathtaking beaches Europe has to offer. I also recommend you come with a big appetite as we take pride in our local cheeses, homemade breads, fresh seafood, and flavorful meats.
